How to Stop Living in Survival Mode & Find More Calm

Writer: Melanie Grime RHNMelanie Grime RHN

Ever feel stressed, overwhelmed, or stuck in overdrive, like no matter how much you try to relax, your mind keeps racing, and your body stays tense? Or maybe you swing between exhaustion and feeling completely on edge?

That’s your nervous system talking.

Your nervous system is constantly scanning for safety or threat. When it senses danger, whether real or perceived, it shifts into fight, flight, freeze, or fawn mode to protect you. This is part of our biology, but it also affects us on a deeper, spiritual level.

When we’re stuck in survival mode, our world feels smaller. We make fear-based decisions, struggle to trust ourselves, and feel disconnected from our intuition, joy, and purpose. On the other hand, when our nervous system is regulated, we move through life with more ease, clarity, and connection.

Your nervous system controls how you respond to stress, rest, and everything in between. When it feels safe, you feel calm, clear, and connected. But when it’s overwhelmed, due to constant stress, past experiences, or simply the fast pace of life, you can get stuck in survival mode.

If your nervous system is overwhelmed, you might experience:

  • Anxiety or overthinking, feeling on edge, even when things are “fine.”

  • Chronic exhaustion, tired, but unable to fully rest.

  • Foggy mind & indecision, trouble focusing or making choices.

  • Mood swings or irritability, small things feel overwhelming.

  • Physical tension, tight shoulders, gut issues, headaches.

  • Feeling disconnected or numb, like you’re going through the motions.

Healing doesn’t just happen alone, it happens in connection.

Our nervous system regulates through co-regulation, which means being in the presence of safe, supportive people can help bring us back to a place of ease.

Think about a time when you felt truly safe and seen. Maybe it was with a friend, in a supportive group, or even through gentle physical touch. That feeling of ease isn’t just emotional, it’s a physiological shift in your nervous system.

This is why community and intentional spaces matter and why is the heart of everything I do and offer. Being in a nurturing, heart-centered environment allows your nervous system to relax, restore, and reset.

The good news? You can help your nervous system shift into a state of ease.

Simple Ways to Reset & Feel More Balanced

  1. Breathe slow & deep: Try the 4-7-8 method (inhale for 4, hold for 7, exhale for 8). This signals safety to your body.

  1. Gentle Movement: Walking, stretching, or yoga helps release tension.

  1. Cool water therapy: Splash your face with cold water or take a cool shower or cold plunge to activate relaxation.

  1. Ground yourself: Walk barefoot on grass, hold a warm drink, or focus on the sights & sounds around you.

  1. Rest without guilt: Prioritizing sleep, slowing down, and setting boundaries isn’t selfish, it’s essential.

  1. Connect with safe people: Being around loved ones (or even cuddling a pet) helps calm your system.

You don’t have to eliminate stress completely, you just need to teach your body how to come back to balance. The more you practice, the easier it becomes to move from overwhelm to calm, from tension to ease.

If you’ve been running on empty, this is your sign to pause, breathe, and reconnect with yourself. Whether it’s through small daily shifts or by joining a community of women on the same journey, you deserve to feel at home in yourself again.

Which of these practices helps you the most? Let’s share in the comments & support each other!
